Komugi, Hunter x Hunter Episode 103
For any of my followers who might not be familiar with HxH, I’d like you to know it through this character.
Meet Komugi. She’s from an impoverished family of 12 from poor country in the HxH world equivalent of North Korea. She’s blind. She speaks in dialect. She’s got thick eyebrows. She’s always got a nose full of snot. She’s a hostage of a strange murderous being and forced to interact with him often, on the threat of death.
She’s also a 3 time world champion of a complicated strategy board game on the same level of chess and go. That makes her her family’s breadwinner.
And she’s not defined by any of that. She uses a walking stick, she asks her opponents to tell her their moves when they play. She’s distressed when something happens nearby that isn’t explained to her. Sometimes she sleeps with her mouth open because she can’t breathe and ends up drooling all over herself. She’s also very brave, honest, respectful, gentle, and non-judgemental.
She’s a character I wouldn’t have seen in any other place. She would’ve either be considered a damsel in distress incapable of saving herself, or someone to be pitied, or someone to mock. She’s none of those three - she manages just fine by herself, within her limits.
Or, as someone else pointed out in the notes, “The most important female love interest in Hunter x Hunter, folks.”
HxH is full with characters like this. Every single character has its strengths and weaknesses (and a unique nose and facial structure!). Some happen to be boys, some happen to be girls (and in Hisoka’s case, sort of both?). Some are butt-ugly, some are drop-dead gorgeous. Nobody comes from a character cookie-cutter, and they all have their own back stories and motives, and even the most ridiculous characters are not idiots.
And that’s why everyone is a baby and everything hurts.
reblogging this again for amazing commentary.
